Core

In the oil & gas world, a core refers to a cylindrical sample of rock taken from a formation during drilling for purposes of determining the formation’s permeability, porosity,  hydrocarbon saturation and other characteristics of petroleum productivity.

How it’s important to us

During the drilling process, core samples are critical to analyzing rock formations and creating a plan for production.  Based on reservoir characteristics, the exploitation manager may change the rate at which a well is produced.  Core sample data is also often captured and stored along with a well for future reference.
