We recently ran across a video from BP that shared a number of interesting facts about America’s energy future. Due to technology improvements like hydraulic fracturing and the addition of oil and gas software, the US has experienced huge booms in production, particularly when it comes to shale gas. As a result:
- 99% of America’s energy is now supplied domestically, up from 70% in 2005
- America will be responsible for 64% of the world’s production of tight oil in 2030
I also was interested in a few of their facts related to improvements in efficiency that are resulting in a decreased environmental footprint:
- Despite economic growth of 56% our share of global energy use will drop by 14%
- We are using less fossil fuels as our energy habits evolve. Fossil fuels accounted for 85% of our total energy use in 2011, compared to 78% of total energy use in 2030
