What is Core Analysis?
A Core is a cylindrical rock sample drilled out from a well. Core analysis is the measurement and interpretation of a core’s petro-physical characteristics.
How is it important to us?
Core analysis provides geologist and engineers comprehensive information on wellbore conditions and the probable productivity (economic value).
The two major types of core analysis are: Routine Core Analysis and Special Core Analysis.
Routine Core Analysis tests are performed under ambient conditions and provide information about the reservoir fluids storage capacity (porosity), flow capacity and distribution (permeability), fluid type and content (saturation) and lithology.
Special Core Analysis (SCAL) are more complex and time consuming. Carried out in laboratories, they supplement the Routine Core Analysis and furnish data on the relative permeability, capillary pressure, wettability of the reservoir rock (preference of the rock for water or oil), pore volume compressibility (useful in predicting hydrocarbon recovery), rock electrical properties (resistivity).
