MOBILE APP DEVELOPMENT
You’re most likely familiar with what are called consumer-facing or B2C mobile applications. There are more than 4 million apps available between the Android and iPhone app stores. Whatever you can conceive of, it seems, there’s an app for that.
You may be less familiar with the trend towards enterprise mobile apps, applications developed by companies meant to be used by their employees on tablets or phones. These types of apps have become more popular as employees have become accustomed to using their mobile devices, especially in industries that can take advantage of what mobile apps can offer that regular desktop applications cannot.
IT’S ALL ABOUT MOBILITY
Use Case 1: Field Data Capture
If you have personnel working remotely, gathering information to relay back to a central data processing step or data store, they need some way to record that data. The old way of doing things was to fill out a paper form and then re-key that information into a system. This is inefficient, since you have to enter the data twice, and leads to mistakes in transcription. It’s much better to replace that clipboard with a tablet and allow remote personnel to enter information directly in the system.
Use Case 2: Workflow from the Hotel Lobby
Let’s imagine the team is executing a workflow, and they get to the step where executive approval is needed. If the executive is traveling and away from his or her computer, does the workflow stop?
If the workflow is part of a mobile application that can be accessed on a tablet or phone outside of the company’s network, work can continue. Our executive can pull up the relevant information on his or her phone and then give their approval, no matter where they are.
Use Case 3: Notifications and Alerts
Unlike desktop computers, phones and tablets are very good at delivering urgent news in the form of notifications and alerts.
Imagine a data anomaly occurs at a plant, such as a unit producing well below their quota during an hour. The plant manager’s phone vibrates, and a notification informs him of this issue so that he can immediately investigate.
Compare this with the plant manager receiving an email, which he won’t notice until the next time he opens his email application. If he’s not at his desk, this could be hours later, after the workers from that unit have gone home for the day.
