Viscosity
Viscosity is a measure of a fluid’s resistance to flow.
How it’s important to us
Viscosity plays an important role in the petroleum industry as it affects oil’s ability to flow easily. Heavy oils for example have higher velocity and lower flow rate than light oils. They require more pressure to pump them out and keep flowing.
This physical characteristic of oil depends on factors such as temperature, pressure, dissolved gas and composition. Viscosity is measured in centipoises (cP).
