Horizon
A horizon is an underground geological formation which is a portion of the larger formation possessing sufficient porosity and permeability to constitute a reservoir.
How it’s important to us
You can think about horizons as very early precursors to what are eventually wells drilled in the ground. Geologists working within the exploration department scour terabytes of seismic data to find potential hydrocarbon traps. Many times they use specialized programs that can filter “raw” seismic data (color-coded 3D maps that are the result of Doppler probes) into horizons, based on input parameters. This allows them to more quickly analyze the enormous amount of data and focus only on formations that have the potential to be a reservoir.
