Reservoirs
Reservoirs are porous and permeable underground formations that contain natural accumulations of producible hydrocarbons. These formations are confined by impermeable rock or water barriers and are separate from other reservoirs.
How it’s important to us
The exploration departments within oil & gas organizations are dedicated to discovering hydrocarbon traps, which are present in reservoirs. Through the use of seismic data that reflects back differing wavelengths based on rock type, they are able to identify potential traps. They evaluate the probability of success (finding a producible reservoir) and, assuming a high enough probability, the well is drilled. It is important to note that a single well is often drilled through multiple different reservoirs and you should not think of them as having a one-to-one relationship.
